Jaichandra

Jaichandra
(?-1193)
Gahadavala ruler of Benaras and Kanauj who came to the throne in 1173. He controlled a vast territory that ex-tended east to Gaya and Patna. There is a belief that he had turned hostile toward Prithviraja III because the latter had eloped with his daughter Sanjogta. Tradition also suggests that Jaichandra had en-couraged Muhammad Ghauri to invade northwestern India ruled by the Chahamanas. Jaichandra was defeated and killed by Muhammad Ghauri at Chanwar (40 kilometers east of Agra) in 1193.
